I had my first White Russian when I had first turned 21. In fact I think it may have been one of my very first cocktails. My friend Camille – who had been 21 for all of about 2 months before, was deemed the expert on all things alcohol related (she also worked at a restaurant/bar which only added to her wealth of knowledge). She handed me a drink and said “Here, try this”. I faithfully took a sip and decided it was delicious.
As any other 21 year old, I knew there had to be other tasty drinks out there, just as good as this one, thus my love for White Russians was quickly forgotten.
Every time I see a bottle of Kahlúa and it reminds me of those White Russians we used to drink. Nowadays I reserve them just for special occasions, so I thought it would be fun to put a holiday twist on them for my 12 Cocktails of Christmas series.
Peppermint (and all things candy cane flavor) are my absolute favorite – I think it compares to how many people feel about pumpkin. That is how I feel about peppermint.
Obviously addition of peppermint, and peppermint alone, would make this drink utterly irresistible. The combination of Kahlúa with peppermint schnapps plus a generous amount of half and half (mmm..creamy) works wonders. It’s not only festive, but easy to make in a hurry if you have last minute company.
And the crushed candy cane rim adds the perfect holiday flair. But I’m not going to lie, crushing candy canes is kind of a pain. My favorite tip – when I’m crushing some, I normally try to make a little extra and store them in a tupperwear container to use for the rest of December in case I need some on a whim.
Also it can be a little tricky to get smashed up candy canes to stick to the outside of a glass, so to rim mine, I dipped the edge of my glasses in a little clear corn syrup before dipping them into the candy cane.
- 3/4 oz Kahlúa
- 3/4 oz Vodka
- 3/4 oz Peppermint Schnapps
- Half and half
- Crushed candy canes
- Clean corn syrup
Fill an old fashioned glass with ice (rimmed with crushed candy cane, if desired). Pour in Kahlúa, vodka and Peppermint Schnapps.Top off the glass with half and half to fill.
Lightly dip the edge of glass into corn syrup, then dip the glass into crushed candy canes to garnish.
