I am completely shocked that August is already here..where did summer go? Well..maybe that’s a little rhetorical since summer is still here in Arizona. We still have a solid month and a half until the temps start to drop a little…
One of my favorite things about summer is getting to relax and sip on an icy cold drink to cool off – and if I’m really being picky I’ll take a shady spot by the pool with a good book in hand.
I’ve found that in the sweltering heat of summer, I tend to shy away from the super sugary drinks. So I like to mix up some that have loads of flavor, but don’t taste overly sweet. Which brings me to the gem that is the cucumber.
I know what you’re thinking – cucumber? In a drink? It sounds strange, but I promise you it is not. Cucumbers bring a bright and refreshing element to this drink, plus they pair perfectly with gin.
For this drink it’s important to pick a good quality gin – the cucumber has a subtle flavor that we want to compliment, not smother. A quality gin will have a good botanical flavor profile that will really make the drink. I used Hendrick’s, which is actually infused with a little cucumber. Personally I like the flavor of this gin – sometimes gin can be too citrusy and taste a bit pinesol-esque to me haha.
But what’s a drink without a delightful dish to pair with it? Ari made this wonderfully fresh Mediterranean Quinoa Salad to serve along side my drink for this summer episode of Drink & Dish. Check it out:
I think this may might be my favorite Drink & Dish pairing yet. It’s crazy how well the two compliment each other – and Ari’s salad is so delicious!
