This summer has really flown by – It seems like Labor Day Weekend has snuck up on me a little. Labor Day always seems like the one last hurrah before summer is over. But I’m not ready to fully give up my summer quite yet! I don’t think I ate nearly enough watermelon – or ice cream for that matter.
There’s no way I can let this weekend pass without a little summery shindig – specifically something involving the pool, sunshine and food. Summer pool parties are all about easy entertaining – I’m talking about pitcher style drinks for a crowd and a variety of bottled beers.
Easy food too with lots of snacks & dips (you better believe this loaded potato chip dip will be making an appearance!). The main dish cooked up on the grill – Let’s be honest, I don’t want to miss any action while I’m inside cooking haha. Hebrew National Hot Dogs have been my go to this summer, but I’m making it just a little more fun with a build your own hot dog station.
I want people to have lots of options so the basics (like ketchup and mustard) are a must, but I’m keeping it interesting with stuff like my homemade mustard relish. Just in case people aren’t feeling creative I’m putting out a few recipe cards with to help them build one of my favorite hot dog recipes like my Asian Slaw Dogs with Sriracha Mayo or these Fiesta Dogs – and these Chicago Style Hot Dogs.
My inspiration for these Chicago style dogs comes from my upcoming trip to Chicago to visit my friend Camille. I’ve been looking into things to do – and things to eat so trying a Chicago dog (and Chicago style pizza, duh) is at the top of my list. I decided to tackle making them at home before my big trip.
If you’re not familiar with what’s on a Chicago dog, let me start by telling you that these guys are LOADED. I’m not lying when I tell you that my bun bust open at the seam when I went to take a bite cuz there’s so much on it haha. Besides the hot dog there’s a pickle spear, peppers, onion, tomato, relish, yellow mustard and celery salt. That’s a serious list. Give them a try – you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
- 4 hot dogs
- 4 poppy seed hot dog buns
- 4 kosher dill pickle spears
- ¼ cup sweet relish
- 4 sport peppers
- 4 tomato slices, cut in half
- ¼ cup diced onion
- yellow mustard
- celery salt
- Cook hot dogs as directed on package.
- To assemble: Place 1 hot dog in each bun, top each one with a pickle spear, relish, a pepper, 2 tomato slice halves, diced onion, a drizzle of mustard and a sprinkle of celery salt.
