With Father’s Day just around the corner, Ari and I put together a drink and a dish that will undoubtedly please any Dad.
Speaking of Dads, I had dinner with my dad last night. Over dinner I mentioned that there was a brewing supply store in the area that I have been meaning to check out – my dad immediately knew the exact place I was talking about (despite living on the other side of the valley). And knowing how chatty I am…he suggested I make sure I go to this place with plenty of time to spare cuz the workers will happily share their knowledge – fine by me!
Quickly the conversation turned to a discussion of alcohol infusions, cocktails and beer/wine making. Umm who knew my dad and I shared that as a mutual interest?! We bounced around a couple of ideas and he gave me a few suggestions for perfecting a few recipes I’ve been testing. I love that my dad has such a vast knowledge and passion for food – He really inspires me to be fearless in the kitchen.
When Ari and I first started brain storming for our Father’s Day edition of Drink & Dish I wasn’t quite sure what direction to go. Cocktails are often seen as feminine so I wanted something that sounded manly right off the bat.
I finally landed on a classic Old Fashioned. It’s basically straight booze and not too sweet – plus Don Draper drinks them so that automatically gives them a masculine boost. And the bacon – why the heck not!? What guy doesn’t love bacon?
I whipped up a bottle of bacon infused bourbon to start the drink off right – you really should check out the recipe and make yourself a bottle (it’s pretty darn tasty, if you ask me). The brown sugar simple syrup gets added to give it an extra dimension of flavor with the sweetness instead of regular sugar. But I stayed true to the drink with the addition of the bitters, muddled orange slice and cherry (I used my homemade cocktail cherries in ours!).
Personally I like my drinks a bit sweeter than the average old fashioned, so I like to add a bit extra brown sugar simple syrup to mine.
- 1 tsp brown sugar simple syrup*
- 1 orange wedge
- 2 dashes bitters
- 2 oz bacon infused bourbon
- 1 cocktail cherry
In an old fashioned glass gently muddle the brown sugar simple syrup, bitters and orange wedge, taking care not to muddle the orange peel.
Fill glass with ice, pour in bacon infused bourbon and garnish with a cherry.
*To make brown sugar simple syrup, combine equal parts brown sugar and water. Heat until sugar is dissolved. Allow to chill thoroughly before using.
