Drink & Dish: Boozy Birthday Cake Shake

Today I’m another year older. I sure as heck don’t feel any older – in fact, I still feel like I’m 18.  I’ve officially been an “adult” for 10 years, where the heck does the time go?!?

I do miss things like recess and that lovely 3 month summer vacation from school, but being a grown up isn’t all that bad and has it’s perks – I can stay up as late as I want and refuse to do chores when I don’t feel like it. And drink adult beverages. Really delicious alcoholic beverages like this Boozy Birthday Cake Shake!

We start this puppy off with none other than cake flavored vodka – there’s a ton of brands that make it now so just pick your fav (or try a new one!). Then we add some amaretto for a little depth and hint of almond flavor. That takes care of the booze.

Next up we have our ice cream – just plain vanilla will work here, or if you’re feeling fancy you can use a cake flavored ice cream (like this homemade no cake mix version I shared yesterday) or you could even use some cake batter frozen yogurt.

And then we’ve got the cake mix. I’ve made this a couple different ways so you have some options. You could use some store bought cake mix  – or you could use a homemade cake mix blend (like this homemade funfetti cake mix that Ari made) and add in a splash of butter flavoring/extract (about 1/2 tsp).

After we blend it all up we stir in some sprinkles. In my world sprinkles aren’t really “optional” but if you’re not a fan I guess you could skip it. While drinking my shake I noticed that the sprinkles will slowly start to sink to the bottom, so be sure to use a thick straw to make sure you don’t leave any of those guys behind. And no shake would be complete without a swirl of whipped cream and a generous handful of sprinkles on top.

Drink & Dish: Boozy Birthday Cake Shake

Serves: 4 small or 2 large shakes
  • 3 cups vanilla or cake batter ice cream
  • 1 cup ice
  • 3 shots cake flavored vodka
  • 1 shot amaretto
  • 2 tbsp cake mix
  • ¼ cup sprinkles (Jimmies work best), plus more to garnish
  • Whipped cream
  1. In a blender combine ice cream, ice, cake flavored vodka, amaretto and cake mix. Blend until smooth and well combined. Using a spoon or spatulas, stir in sprinkles.
  2. Pour shakes into serving glasses, top with whipped cream and garnish with additional sprinkles.
