I’m trying to make the most of this cool weather while we’ve still got it here in Phoenix – so last Saturday I ran the Firefly Run! It’s a night race that takes place in various cities across the US – the phoenix race was a 5k.
The race started just after sunset – and each participant is given two neon light-up/flashing arm bands to wear for the race. But myself (and many other runners!) came adorned in bright neon colors and glow in the dark accessories!
I somehow managed to drag Lance to this race with me – and we met up with a bunch of my favorite running buddies: Emily and her friend Heather, Ari & Steve and their friends Bethany and Jason, and Stacey.

After chatting for a bit we headed to the start line (with only a few minutes to spare). I convinced Stacey to be my running buddy so we waited relatively close to the front. Once we started running the path was super congested, 1600+ runners all headed down the same path at once was a bit crazy.
I looked over at Stacey and asked if she wanted to weave in/out of the crowd a little until it cleared up a bit – she said yes and we were off! We did this for about .5 a mile then settled into a nice groove. The view of Downtown was really gorgeous – all of the buildings were lit up and it was neat to be running in the middle of the City!
It was cool to see all of the creative running costumes out there – some of these people were crazy. Right around the 1-1.25 mile mark we started to see the super speedy runners on their way back towards the finish. We did our best to cheer them on as they whizzed on past. I was a little disappointed that I didn’t see any ladies with the initial bunch, but once we did our best send her some motivation.
There was water at the turn around point, but Stacey and I skipped it since we both had water with us and kept on truckin. We saw Ari, Bethany and Jason as we were approaching mile 2 and waved hello – then saw Emily and Heather shortly after!
As we approached the finish line I convinced Stacey that we should sprint the last little bit – And she was down for it! We crossed the finish line in 27:48! I was impressed with that since my legs were a smidge tired from my 4 mile training run earlier that morning – but I loved running with a new friend, it kept me motivated :) This course was almost identical to the one I ran for the Undy 5000 so it was cool to run it again with a little more raining under my belt!
After the race Stacy and I grabbed a few snacks and took advantage of the red carpet photo op. We met up with the rest of the gang then headed out to Papago Brewery for some post race food!
